i-education on Mobile Learning
Mobile learning is a growing and exciting arena in education today. The empowerment of mobile computing combined with the ownership of devices, tools and content is changing the face of education for learners around the globe; especially in homes where the mobile device may be the only access to information technology.
i-education have been evangelizing about mobile learning for a number of years and have seen the early projects; evaluating the potential impact on teaching and learning and simple notions such as the physical safety of students supplied with a SmartPhone, develop beyond simple evaluation criteria to the emergence of pedagogies associated with learner mobility. To this end we have seen the transition from technical focus (emphasis on the technology) to learning focus, now being expressed as learning whilst mobile (emphasis on the learner traveling through physical and conceptual space). The first evaluation report published by i-education can be found here, referenced in the Guardian here.
i-education have consulted on a wide range on mobile learning projects and were made development partners of the Learning Everywhere national mobile learning project. We have experience supporting projects with the change management associated with mobile learning, implementation of projects, supporting effective decisions around technology and connectivity to which end, partners GAIST add value, mobile learning content development and teacher training.
Throughout all projects, i-education identified a range of logistical challenges with supporting an on-going and effective mobile learning provision, to which end the m-learning.mobi platform was developed. m-learning.mobi is a mobile learning platform where teachers can create SCORM compliant mobile learning objects, share in the mobile learning repository using LOM standards for maximum interoperability and deploy to learners mobile devices, and users upload their content and learning to their online life space.
i-education are respected in the field for their knowledge of mobile learning and were asked to present at Handheld Learning 2007 where Michael Wilkinson, Director, gave a presentation titled 'Ubiquitous technologies, personalisation and always on learners' The video and presentation can be found here. i-education are also active contributors in the Handheld Learning community www.handheldlearning.co.uk
i-education can support mobile learning initiatives through consultancy, content development and the tools and applications they have developed through research.
